BJ’s Wholesale Club today unveiled BJ’s Market, a smaller format store in Warwick, RI that is about half the size of a full size club.
Plans call for the official opening of the 43,000 square foot BJ Market, located at 375 East Ave. in Warwick on May 6, Westborough, Mass.-based BJ’s announced Friday. The new retail concept is designed to provide a “convenient and efficient shopping experience,” offering a mix of fresh foods, fresh produce, sundries and best-selling seasonal products, among other items, according to the warehouse club chain based in Westborough, Mass. .
Members will find the same pack sizes and prices as full-service BJ clubs, as well as the same services, such as curbside pickup, same-day delivery and express checkout, BJ noted. In addition, BJ’s Market will include testing of new product assortments, displays, product sampling and demonstrations, and convenience initiatives, the company said. The product line will also include popular national brands as well as BJ’s Wellsley Farms and Berkley & Jensen’s own brands.
“BJ’s Market will serve as an exciting new innovation lab for BJ’s Wholesale Club,” Bill Werner, executive vice president of strategy and development at BJ’s, said in a statement. “We offer the same savings and value that our members know and love, but with a convenient location closer to home.”
Current BJ members will have immediate access to BJ’s Market, BJ’s said. In support of the new retail banner, customers who sign up for BJ’s Market will have full access to all BJ’s Clubs and Gas Stations and until May 5, they will get a one-year subscription. at BJ’s Inner Circle for $25 or a one-year subscription to BJ’s Perks Rewards. for $65.
BJ’s Chairman and CEO Robert Eddy announced the upcoming BJ’s Market in Warwick when communication of the results for the 2021 financial year early March. He noted that a more compact format will serve as a hub for innovation and could provide a new avenue of growth for the retailer’s physical base.
“As we consider the various ways to develop new units, we will also be opening a small box pilot this year,” Eddy said in a March 3 call with analysts. “While this may become a new vector for expansion for us, it will initially function as an innovation lab.”
This year, BJ’s aims to open 11 clubs, including in new markets such as Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; and Nashville, Tennessee; and existing markets such as Atlanta; Miami and Orlando, Florida; Richmond, Virginia; Detroit and the New York metropolis. BJ’s Market in Warwick is part of the first phase of expansion which will also include new clubs in Lady Lake, Florida; Canton, Michigan; and Greenburgh, NY Currently, BJ’s operates 227 clubs and 159 BJ’s gas stations in 17 states.
