Woolworths has announced a major change to its fresh fruit and vegetable section, across all stores in Australia.

The supermarket giant, in partnership with Tiliter, is introducing new artificially intelligent (AI) scales to the produce aisle.

The company said the new scales will help customers manage their budgets by providing a quick and convenient reading of the weight of fruits and vegetables.

Shoppers simply place their bulk products on the Tiliter AI scale which will display the weight of the product on the screen – instead of waiting for them to checkout for an accurate reading.

The new scales will replace the analog proximity scales currently found in the produce department to offer customers a modern digital alternative.

Woolies says the AI scales have also been placed in-store at a lower height to ensure customers with special needs, particularly those in wheelchairs, have unobstructed access.

The new technology is currently being tested and tested in a handful of stores across the country.

The scales are set to be rolled out gradually across the network of over 1,000 Woolworths supermarkets.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Tiliter through the implementation of new digital scales,” Woolworth’s Sailesh Shankar, Head of Business Solutions – Customer, Retail and Emerging Concepts.

“These scales will help provide a better in-store shopping experience for our customers through accessibility and convenience.

“We will be listening carefully to customer and team member feedback on the project over the coming months.”

This trial follows the partnership between Tiliter and Woolworths, first formed during the rollout of Woolworths’ Scan & Go program in 2020.

“The deployment of Tiliter AI Scales across Woolworths nationwide makes the future of retail a reality,” said Tiliter CEO Marcel Herz:

“Through this partnership, a growing number of Australian shoppers now have the ability to use innovative AI technology in everyday environments as naturally and seamlessly as they would with their smartphones.

“With this kind of technology able to scale across e-commerce, this is just the beginning.”

Up to six scales will be located in the fruit and vegetable section of Woolworths stores and will be lined up at the front of each fresh produce aisle.
